Dr. Peer Frank
has been involved for 25 years in the development and testing of various aircraft, e.g. manned and unmanned aircraft with extreme flying altitude and/or distance, business and commuter jets, piston and turbo-prop training machines and muscle-powered aircraft. Dr. Frank is employed by Skytec.
Dr.-Ing. Gert Hinsenkamp
was born in Pforzheim in 1961 and studied mechanical engineering from 1981-87 with a focus on thermal continuous flow machines, obtaining his doctorate in 1993 at the Technical University in Karlsruhe with a thesis on engine-map comparison and the similarity mechanics of small aircraft for regenerative energy use. He is engaged in research and development in the fields of compressor, reformer and fuel-cell technology and has been a leading figure at Daimler AG in fuel-cell drive development since 2002.
Hirsenkamp has been an aviation enthusiast since his youth, active as a motor and aerobatic pilot.
Dipl.-Ing. Franz Karl
After studying aerospace-travel technology at Stuttgart University, he has been employed as a scientist at the aerospace faculty at Stuttgart University in the field of aviation and materials. In addition to his lecturer’s activities he works on research projects commissioned by the industry. Karl is a member of various professional bodies.
Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Kensche
was born in 1946 and studied aerospace at the University of Stuttgart. After working for many years in the research sector (DLR, FhG), with a particular focus on the fatigue strength of fibre-reinforced composites (FRC) in light aircraft and rotor blades for wind turbines, he was recently employed as the senior scientist at a company which produces resin and adhesive systems primarily for wind turbine blades as well as for aircraft. In his free time, he is a passionate glider pilot and has been a flight instructor at a Stuttgart-based flying club for many years.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Otto Künzel (Vorsitzender der Jury)
is a university lecturer in automation technology and has been an active aviator since 1954. He retired in 2004.
studied empirical culture science and political science in Tübingen. Subsequently she was involved for several years in project management and was head of various cultural and educational institutions. From 2007 to 2012 she was head of the City of Ulm’s Department of Culture, which is responsible among other things for the organisation of the Berblinger Competitions. In September 2012 she became Ulm’s Mayor for Culture, Education and Social Affairs.
Dipl.-Ing. Josef Prasser
is an executive partner in the aviation company Wolf-Hirth GmbH in Nabern and has been an active glider and motor plane pilot for more than 50 years.
Dr.-Ing. Michael Rehmet
studied aerospace technology in Stuttgart. His involvement in the development and construction of the solar-powered airship Lotte and the solar-powered aircraft icaré formed the basis for his PhD-thesis in 1998. Rehmet subsequently worked for Fairchild Dornier, then from 2003 at Eurocopter Deutschland GmbH, where he has been Vice President of the business division for aircraft door systems since January 2009. He has been a model-aircraft constructor and pilot for more than 30 years and a glider pilot for 19 years as well as being a flying instructor with almost 1500 flight lessons to his credit.
Dipl.-Ing. Bernd Schmidtler
developed an unusual aircraft for his own flights. He converted a hanging ladder into wings and equipped it with a frame and a motor. The whole propulsion system of the gravity-steered aircraft and the pilot’s seat were installed in the swivel-mounted frame. The aircraft was named RANGER M. This type of ultra light aircraft later became known as a trike, owing to the usually triangular construction design.
Dipl.-Ing. Peter F. Selinger (Stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Jury)
born in 1940, is one of the best know German gliding-flight historians and photographers. He studied electrotechnology at Stuttgart University, was employed for 21 years by a large electrical company and subsequently held a responsible position in broadcasting for 12 years. He is the author of standard works of aviation literature, such as the history of the Horten wing-only glider (Weishaupt 1983 ff) and the gliders and aircraft of Schempp-Hirth and Wolf-Hirth (Motorbuch-Verlag 1978 ff). Since 1999 he has devoted himself entirely to aviation history, with a focus on gliding.
Prof. Dr. Werner Tillmetz,
Since 2004 Professor Dr. Werner Tillmetz is board member of ZSW and head of the division Electrochemical Energy Technologies, as well as member of the faculty of natural sciences at the University of Ulm. In 1984 he earned his doctor degree in electrochemistry at the Technische Universität München. For more than 20 years he held several management positions in industry including Dornier (energy technologies in space application), Daimler Benz AG and Ballard Power Systems (fuel cell drive train), and Süd‐Chemie AG (catalysts). Tillmetz is although engaged in various committees, e.g. as Chairman of the advisory board “National Organization Hydrogen and Fuel Cells (NOW GmbH)”, and co‐founder and board member of the “Competence Network for Lithium‐Ion Batteries (KLiB e.V.)”.
is a joiner as well as being a partner and managing director of the Unseld Ladenbau group of companies. He has been an active aviator since 1969 and has taken part in national and international gliding competitions. He is the chairman of Ulm Sports Aviation Club.
Prof. Dr. Karsten Urban
was born in Hamburg in 1966 and studied mathematics and information technology at Bonn University and at the RWTH (University of Applied Sciences) in Aachen. After obtaining his doctorate, as well as a post-doctoral teaching qualification, and following prolonged research assignments in Italy and the Netherlands, he was appointed Professor of Numerical Mathematics at Ulm University in 2002. His fields of research include numerical simulation and stream optimization as well as scientific computing. As spokesman for the Scientific Computing Center in Ulm he has headed numerous cooperation projects with industry. In 2011 he was visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jörg F. Wagner
studied aerospace technology at Stuttgart University, obtained his PhD in the field of technical cybernetics and a post-doctoral degree in the field of mechatronics. He was a development engineer at Aerodata Flugmesstechnik GmbH, Braunschweig from 1993 – 1996 and senior engineer and post-doctoral researcher at the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg from 1997-2002. Since 1993 Wagner has been Professor of Adaptive Structures in Aerospace at Stuttgart University /Deutsches SOFIA Institute. His areas of expertise are mechanics, mechatronics, systems theory, navigation and science history.
Dipl. Ing. Horst Wilser
was born in 1946 in Heidelberg in Germany. After his studies at the University of Technology in Stuttgart, he operated in the development, certification, flight test and manufacturing of glasfibre gliders at Grob Aircraft in Mindelheim. Afterwards he worked from 1985 until 1991 for Porsche in Stuttgart/ Wiessach. There he was responsible for the certification of the Porsche aircraft engine and the operating licences of the aviation department. Then Mr. Wilser changed to BMW Rolls-Royce in Munich/Lohhof and afterwards to Rolls-Royce Deutschland in Dahlewitz near Berlin, where he has worked 18 years for the quality management of the jet engines. Horst Wilser has been active in flying since 1963, was also in the executive committee in several flying associations. Mister Wilser is retired since 2009.
Dr. Hartung Wilstermann
was born in 1969 in Heidelberg, Germany. He studied electrical engineering at the Karlsruhe University of Technology and obtained his doctorate at Daimler in 1999 based on his research on ignition systems for internal combustion engines. During 1999 to 2010 he held various positions in the field of drive electronics, Start-Stop-Systems and Hybrid Powertrains at Daimler AG. Dr. Wilstermann has been General Manager of Deutsche ACCUmotive GmbH & Co. KG in Kirchheim u. Teck/Nabern, Germany since March 2010, where he is responsible for development and program management of high voltage battery systems for automotive purpose based on lithium ion technology. He started his aeronautical career in the 80th by building up electric model planes. In the 90th he made the pilot licence for gliders, motorgliders and paragliding. Today his flying activites are focused on Ultralight airplans.
